I quote: ' We submit ourselves to Starfleet discipline because we know it is made necessary by the realities of deep space exploration. We are proud that each of us accepted this discipline voluntarily-and doubly proud when neither temptation nor jeopardy is able to shake our obedience to the oath we have taken." ( James Tiberius Kirk. Star Trek: the motion picture. Preface 1)
I quote again: " Why Star Trek again? I suppose the real truth is that I have always looked upon the Enterprise and its crew my own private view of Earth and humanity in microcosm. If this is not the way we really are, it seems to me most certainly a way we ought to be(...). Much of my pleasure in Kirk, Spock, Mc Coy, Uhura, Scottie, Chekov, Chapel and Rand had to do with such things. I have always found some hope for myself in the fact that the Enterprise crew could be so humanly fallible and yet be some of the greates things, too." (Gene Roddenberry; Star Trek: the motion picture. Preface 2.)
I quote: "Academy President: (...). 'Cadet, Kirk, evidence has been submitted to this council suggesting you have violated the ethical code of conduct pursual to regulation 17.43 of the Starfleet code...' Academy President: 'in academic vernacular, you cheated.' (...). James T. Kirk: 'If I'm right, the test itself is a cheat' . I don't believe in no win scenarios' (...) .Captain Pike: :'Cheating is not winning'. " (from Star Trek 2009))

Ok, I think, is only my opinion, this new Kirk is too arrogant to incarnate trek values. 'Hey, Academy, you're wrong. I'm not.' I'm infallible and I want to be win. Always. For me , this is the most important thing.'
Yips... :(
He's not a way we ougth to be.. The most important thing is not always to win.Not in Star Trek. No without honesty. Remember Picard and Kirk (Shatner) ;)
I think this new Kirk is not a trek character at all. But, he's a very good Buck Rogers.

Here's my thoughts on new Kirk(as opposed to original recipe)The significant thing that struck me about the difference between Kirk and picard was Picard started out as a gifted but rakish cad and became what he is through seasoning and experience whereas Kirk was the exact opposite. He was Starfleet's golden boy before he began his maverick streak that characterized his captaincy.

The new version seems to make him like picard. Now because his life history has been rewritten he's a maverick right off the bat.

I imagine the original kirk did something equally distinctive to earn the youngest captaincy in fleet history but it couldn't have been this.Plus he goes into the Academy relatively late in life.Almost every major character has more seniority than him.

Do I think new Kirk is cocky?Yes.Do i like him?Oh hell yes! He's not the original but still he works!

I think Kirk was always a farmboy. In both versions of him. Of course farmboys are troublemakers, they don't really have anything to do with their time. Especially in the future. I also agree that the newer Kirk is different because he did not have his father around. Nero and Spock did change the timestream creating this ALTERNATE universe. This is newer Kirk is exactly how I would picture someone with enough balls to stand up to Starfleet and cheat on a test. The only thing I hated was that they gave him the Captain's chair even though he was an unseasoned officer. Its like one min. he's just a cadet in trouble for cheating, the next, he is a captain with the most powerful vessel in the fleet. I have a hard time believing Bones when he is speaking to Saviik in the Genisis cave, "Cadet, you are looking at the only person in the history of Starfleet to beat the no win scenerio." The William Shatner Kirk I could never picture cheating.

If you are referring to the character, I would say it was fine. Although I think Chris Pine is a good actor, the fact he looked absolutely NOTHING like Shatner's Kirk bothered me. They went all the way in casting with regard to McCoy and Spock but dropped the ball with Pine. I also disagree with the decision not to imitate the characters (at least a little bit). Urban's McCoy was spot-on and not overdone. Yet, we get to see a bit of what Deforest brought to the original character.

I am female. Therefore , I find the "new Kirk " spicy as Jack Sparrow!!! Hes got balls, spunk and excitement. Compared to the "old " Kirk, this one is on fire for the Federation and really wants to lead . Chris Pine did a great job and he is HOT. He loves to fight get his butt kicked. He dose not put up with any crap. Leave him alone. I hope he comes back and dose another Star Trek movie! ( He will be in the movie "carriers " soon. )

I meant no disrespect. As I said, he's a really good actor and I'll take your word for it that he's hot. The fact is, he looks NOTHING like Shatner's Kirk and, since they made all the others at least look something like the originals, that's what upset me. I just felt he should have tried to pay a little homage to Shatner in style, voice, movement, etc. Urban did it and did it well as McCoy. That's all I'm saying.

I think he does pay homage to the original, in smaller ways but noticeable ways- at least I thought so. There is a bit of the Kirk swagger there, in the way he enters the bridge in the last scene. He enters, pauses, then walks to the chair talking to Bones. That pause reminds me of the original Kirk assessing people and situations before saying anything- "grokking" his crew, the people under his care. When in the chair, he crosses his legs, something Shatner did, too. Most men don't sit that way very often, which makes it all the more noticeable. (last scene). My problem with Chris Pine is that he doesn't look like a man. He looks like a boy sitting in the captain's chair. You can be young and still be manly. Chris Pine isn't that. I find it kind of embarrassing. Spock looks more like a man, and I really enjoyed the seasoned Captain Pike.

I think the manliest guy in the new film is Karl Urban's McCoy, despite having so little to do in the story.

Chris Pine would've been perfect for a new Flash Gordon adap. He is passable as Kirk. Shatner's personality, acting style and body language helped create the original character. Should Pine simply imitate or come up with something of his own? I don't think he did any of either.

Maybe something interesting could evolve with Pine. For example, I don't think Michael Dorn (Worf) is the best of actors. But he added things each season- a little more humor, more dimension- that gave his character some life after a while.

"James Kirk was a great man. But that was in another life"

I loved it..It had a wow factor to me.. the special effects were wonderous and Nero... too bad he's a bad guy .. he would have made a great Starfleet Officer...all the new charaters did great jobs.. I especially loved McCoy.. too bad I am so old now :} :}

I liked that Star Trek has been jump started again. Chris Pine did OK, but compared to Shatner he is crap!!! The guy who played his father would've been a better pic! Kirk was one of the weakest characters in my opinion. He just didn't carry the role at all. I've seen other movies with Pine, and although I like him as an actor ok, he wasn't kirk. He looks nothing like Kirk, he acts nothing like Kirk, and doesn't have any depth. Being cocky is fine as long as it's not the only trick in your bag (besides being eyecandy for the women).
I liked Spock alot, and McCoy was fine, but Pine/Kirk was a big let down for me. Maybe if I wasn't a fan of the original??
Also the bridge design WAS COMPLETE CRAP ON A STICK!!! The art department who came up with that should never work again!!! Also the Engineering was pretty bad also.

I meet the Captain Kirck at the 40th. anivisery in Los Vegas , I think this new Captain Kirck has the part down pat. I also like the new Spoock, Scotty and Bones. The only person of the old group I did not get to meet was Bones . I have meet all the other members of the original Star Trek , I did not get to meet Bones as he had passed on befor I could.
But this new Captain of the Enterprise has my vote for more movies.

My heart is breaking all over again. So this auction will only be for locals or will they allow bids online? Once I see a catalog I may be contacting wither Darren, Jeef, or Vernon to bid on something on my behalf if it won't be online.
