Whether You Liked It, Hated It or Are Somewhere In Between -- What Were Your "Oh, come on!" Moments from the Movie?

Just like the very long title says, whether or not you liked the new movie, there's bound to be those nagging, "Oh, come on!" moments of disbelief that crept into any given scene.

One that still leaps out at me is the bug. Yes, that nasty looking creepy-crawley held by tongs that showed up in what appeared to be a torture scene with Pike. Hubby says it was mentioned Nero stopped off at Ceti Alpha V on his way across the universe, but I don't recall the reference. I was too busy staring at that bug, no doubt screaming, "Oh, come on!" LOL

So, tell me about your same such moments. :-P

Michael is quite right. It is a well known and often mentioned fact that the Enterprise is the Flagship of Starfleet. It is supposed to be the finest in the fleet, that's why everyone tries to get a position on the Enterprise. Also why Starfleet adopted the delta shield badge for use on every ship after the original series. Which is why I wondered why everyone wore one in the new flick, in TOS each ship had it's own patch.

Flag ship does not really mean an Admiral is stationed on board. Flag ship is usually given to the most powerful vessel in the Navy, and is usually the pride and Joy of the fleet. It is the one that everyone talks about and is used in commercials and movies (the Enterprise carrier is still the Flagship of the US Navy). The Enterprise in every Star Trek ever made has been the flag ship of Star Fleet command, but has never had an admiral permanently stationed.

Too me, that seemed more Kingony than Humany. Klingons promote that way, not humans. It is a very bad way cause someone who is underqualified (such as Kirk was) would end up getting command when they are not ready. That seemed very chaotic. Yeah, Kirk's father was Captain of an unmanned vessel for about 1 min. A really worthwhile command.

I'd have to agree with all the points made... even so, did it stop me enjoying the film? no! I loved it!

but... Romulans needing help from vulcans in creating a black hole to save their planet? Oh come on! they use quantum singularities (black holes) to power their ships!

the whole red matter thing! What is that stuff anyway?

In fact, just about every scientific bit in the film is a "oh come on!"

The reference was from Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan. Khan put the bugs in Chekov's ear in an attempt to kill Kirk and steal project Genesis. There were a lot of "mementos" from the first 6 Star Trek movies that were used in this movie.
Here are some that I thought were examples:
Kirk bumping his head in the shuttle: Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier: Scotty bumps his head after saying that he knows the Enterprise "like the back of my hand."
Spock: "I have been and always shall be your friend." - Originally used in both Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan, and Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock (at the very end).
And the torture bug Nero used as you pointed out: Used in the introduction of Khan in Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan.
And there were a whole bunch of "wtf" instances. But here is my question: how the hell do you get 500 people + an engineering section to fit in that ship, when the 2 level shuttle bay appeared to take up most of the body section?

I think the kiss was a ode to Gene, i dont know why, but i had this funny feeling they had something against Kirk (shatner) or rather giving spock (nimoy) the light this time, the kiss with Uhura playing on the kiss with she and Kirk that brought such a rackus in the 60's. I left the theatre not feeling it was a 'kirk' movie but instead all spock to the core.

I just hated the unexplaining of vulcan being destroyed, to quick a explanation on both sides (Bana and Nimoy) that just left it kinda "LOST" to me.

otherwise it rocked. It was definately made for those that dont know the old ST, Kids nowadays are so into their video games, fast, next level, thats how I felt watching the movie, it was 'quick'....basically quick enough to grab the new generations impatient minds....they never would have made it through if it was made like the old ones....anyone?

What part of Vulcan being destroyed do you feel required more of an explanation? Romulas was destroyed, Nero blamed that on Spock, and wanted Spock to know what it felt like, so he plotted to destroy Vulcan. Unfortunately, he had the means by which to do it, in the end.

If you are not understanding how Vulcan was destroyed, they drilled to the planet's core and introduced the Red Matter. This created a singularity, Black Hole, within the planet.

they could have gone more into detailed explanations, like in Wrath of khan and genesis,we got a indepth look of what was going on down below, what they created, they could have dug deeper into the destruction of Romulus instead of a quick box showing his wife and the destruction. This is the Romulan civilization..what happened? there is more to it than that, even Nemesis started out with explanation into the take over of the senate and then origin of the take over. i just felt in that fashion (of Trek), they did not go deep into the core of what they usually do. the explanation of Klingon transformation on Enterprise..a two part episode. Still I loved the movie, but I felt it was totally steered toward the YOUNGER ones, the ones that play video games, watch terrible horror movies...THEY are the ones that paid the money to see it, thats why it rocked to 70mil plus, not the regular crew like us.

I am just curious if all Trek movies to come will follow this fast plot. I don't think the generation today could sit through the first star trek movie, though I love that movie, i am of that generation, will that ever come back?

The movie was great though, I have been praying for a All Klingon movie on Qo'noS, great opportunity to do something that took place back then too....? with the graphics/effects we have nowadays....that would be great.

Now that we have the younger generations attention, I hope they will check out some "old" trek and enjoy it as much as we did and still do.

I agree. I hope the younger generation infuses some energy into Trekdom.

I felt the villain, Nero was as weak as Soran was in Generations. Also hated the lame phaser Fx (where were the iconic phaser beams?). Also unclear, is Nero and crew supposed to be the last Romulans left? Doesn't make sense since by the late 24th century the Romulans (like the Vulcans) are no doubt on a thousand planets, colonies and stations by now. The species could continue so I don't get the whole end of Romulus or Vulcan thing. The anachronistic verbiage from Kirk, "What'dya want from me, man." Not sure they would still be using 60s hippie slang in the 23rd century. Same with the swearing. It just doesn't fit.

As far as more underwear shots with green gals and Uhura....I'm all for it. Bring it on.

#1 - Kirk on the ice planet. Bear-monster chases him (plot device to drive him toward the cave he doesn't yet know about). Overlord from Howerd the Duck appears and bites the bear-monster and then for some reason chases Kirk. It's like a mountain lion knocking down a coyote and when it is just about to go for the neck, suddenly gets distracted by a field rat. It doesn't make any sense at all. Even from the point of view of plot device. Kirk was placed in an escape pod. Since escape pods are DESIGNED to be used in emergency situations, they should already be provisioned with survival equipment such as a short range tricorder, and survival phaser. Even if the bear-monster appeared, he could have shot it. And the need for the bear-monster as a plot device is non-existant since the tricorder would have been able to point out a nearby shelter cave. The only reason for this scene is for an ILM's GC orgasm.

#2 - Scotty's 'pet'. Pointless. This seems to be nothing more than a quid pro quo orgasm for ILM's creature studio.

#3 - I didn't like the water tube attempt at comedy. Again, as a plot device, Spock needed to know that there were intruders. But internal sensors should have been sufficient. I kept thinkging about the little fat kid in the chocolate factory. The entire scene sticks out like a sore thumb with the big message of "doesn't belong in this movie".
