What kinds of fan fiction would you like to see? Missions headed-up (in the TNG Relaunch-era / pre-"Star Trek: Online"-era) by Captain Morgan Bateson and / or Captain Gabriel Bush, set immediately after Diane Carey's "SHIP OF THE LINE"? Or would you rather see stories based in Captain Sulu's U.S.S. Excelsior-based "Lost Years"?

I haven't read any slash as I personally prefer straight/contemporary fics at trek writers guild and trekbbs.com. But, how do people feel about the presence of gay, lesbian, transgendered, or bisexual characters? Does slash make for poorer, better, or equal stories compared to the rest of the mainstream published material (from pocket books or the commissioned graphic novel companies/authors)? Why or why not?

i wouldn't care if a character LGBT or not as long as their 'gayness' isn't an over-enhanced and stereotypical as it always seemed to be done on contemporary TV shows, etc. as far as profic novels, the few times that a (usually minor) character was gay, there no was no reaction from the others and i found that as interesting as multiracial crews were for viewers i the 60s. i myself am straight but wouldn't have any problems being friends with LGBT people of any gender. as far as slaash or erotic trek, if i read it, it would only be if i'm in the mood for it. i usually read 'standard' trek because it's 'trek,' whether professional or fan-made and in fact, i've read many (most of them by members of stpma) that exceed professional works.

I think slash in limited form is all right. I don't mind having it in there minimally, but I don't want it going into depth any more than I want hetero-relationships in-depth.
I really dont like stuff like Slash in my fan fiction. its not necessary and spoils it. I don't object to relationships being showcased, its the relationships between people that make the story come alive, but whether its slash or straight, I dont want to read about it in detail. I read sci-fi for the sci-fi, if I wanted detailed sex I'd go read a trashy romance.

As for the original question, I'd read fan fiction set in any era of Trek, provided it's well written and has a good concept. I also quite like to see stuff about original characters and ships as there are far more ships, planets and space statins out there than weve seen on screen.
As Starbase stated, I like to see fan fiction based off the original characters (not necessarily TOS, but any of the ST franchise), because those specific characters already have a story line...I find that alot of fan fiction fails to provide proper backstory and character development. (That's more of an issue of the writer, but still.)
Very true Ms. Alice. I started reading a Vulcan 3 Part Series Oh..... Around a year or so ago. And I know Vulcans are typically boring. But seeing how it was STILL Trek. I gave it a shot. Plus it was the only Trek books at my local bookstore I didn't already have. Not to mention I got a discount on it. So I bought the 3 book series. UGH! I almost bored myself into unconsciousness! Absolutely dreadful. Horribly boring. "Vulcan's Soul" (Book 1) I actually quit reading it. I've tried to FORCE myself to read it..... NOPE! Vulcans and their shedding of emotion leads to extremely boring books. Meditation..... Spirituality..... Studying..... Preaching..... Anthony Crying.....(Running away crying!)
Shows how different we all are... I enjoyed the Vulcan series of books, although I found the modern day part of the story boring. Seeing the time of Surak and the split into two (or more) races wa for me, very intersting.
It was similar in the KLingon novel Kahless... the old time part was great (I know alot of die hard KLingons dont agree with me on that) but the modern part was obviously only there to fulfil Paramount's requirement that novels have a main character in them (ie someone from the show such a Worf or Picard)

Alice, I've writen my own fan fiction,, based around a completely original set of characters. I actually found it easier to do that than using purely canon characters as I have more leeway over their background and who they are and where they go. I would very much hope they do come across in the way I hoped, if not then as you say, it would be my fault as the writer.
Awesome. Im glad you enjoyed it. I did skip ahead to the other books. Somewhat better. Didn't like Chekov dying though. Most people did agree with you. I tend to like the ones that aren't popular. And I don't enjoy much of the ones that are touted as good or better....Most of the time anyways
Starbase, I think you could probably use your own set of characters and have a good story...I just know for a lot of authors (at least in my experience), there is a severe lack of background information, and since my biggest issue with most books is character development (ST or not), I have issues there. Were I to sit down and write my own fan fiction, I imagine it would be my own characters with a few canons injected here and there as minor characters. Ideally.
Being that my group has had our online Star Trek role-playing/storytelling running for five years now, it's been practically the equivalent of writing fanfic for all that time, set aboard theStarship Independence with our own characters.

Most of the current group of characters have been around and together for at least three years now (only one has joined less than a year ago), so there's a very well-established character and group dynamic, centered around the captain (which is me.)

And exactly as you've mentioned, Alice, we have had characters from the Star Trek canon as supporting staff, e.g. Admiral Jellico is currently Commandant, Fifth Fleet (and my direct superior); Nechayev left Starfleet and went into politics, and is now President of the Federation; and so on.

We use a forum-based system, so you can see our current as well as past missions posted here. For such a heavily collaborative style of writing, I find that after we've edited and smoothed out some of the rough patches, it actually reads pretty well.

Necheyev as president.. thats actually quite a scary thought, lol. We use a forum based system as well and it seems to work really well for us for our group writing.
I would definitely desire stories based in Captain Sulu's U.S.S. Excelsior-based "Lost Years". It is time for Star Trek to get away from dilution by spinoffs and return to its traditional roots. Captain Sulu's adventures as commander of the U.S.S. Excelsior would make a good television series.
