I probably won't go see Prometheus in a theater. I burned out on dark science fiction many years ago. In fact, that's one of the main theories of why Star Trek has kept a following all this time; people are put off by how dark and negative sci fi usually is, but Star Trek was/is positive at it's core. I think that's also why so many fans didn't take Galaxy Quest as a put-down. It's actually kind of uplifting as well as fun. Paul was pretty cool that way, too.

Anyone going to see Prometheus? It may or may not be a prequel to "Alien" but it is produced by Ridley Scott who directed to first Alien movie. It certainly has the look and feel of Alien and is set in the same universe and time period. Scott is also supposed to be working on sequels to Blade Runner. Obviously the idea of prequels isn't dead yet. So it's possible for the next Star Trek series to be a prequel to the new Star Trek movies. A better version of Enterprise perhaps or a prequel to an improved version of Star Trek: The Next Generation. In any case we be on the brink of new round of science fiction movies and series because what's currently on TV is dull, dull, dull.

well I for one, loved the movie and am trying to find it in blu ray.  I also want to say hello to everyone on here.

Although Galaxy Quest is obviously a spoof of Star Trek it doesn't yet the same attachment to the actors who played the characters in the original movie. So a recasting of the characters in a new movie is probably better in the long run if the studio wants Galaxy Quest to be a franchise series of movies or a TV series. The first movie would be seen as a pilot and, of course, changes can be made for the second. The changes from "The Cage" to "Where No Man Has Gone Before" certainly didn't hurt Star Trek. Irwin Allen produced "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" as theatrical movie first and then recast every character when it became a television series a few years later. I was a kid in the 60s and I didn't mind. Didn't even know there had been a movie until ABC showed it on television. Same sub, same characters, same action, different actors, but still a great show. As for who would play the commander your guess would be as good as mine. But it will be fun speculating about it.

If the origional cast wont return what about a re-working a la the Abrams Trek. GQ with a new hip class! Would Chase Masterson take on the Sigourney Weaver character? But who would play the commander?

If you're doing a spoof, parody or satire of Star Trek you're protected under the 1st Amendment. It's when you do a dramatization of a Star Trek story using pre-established characters or copyrighted intellectual property like "tricorders" and "phasers",etc.. that you better get written authorization from Paramount. Fan fiction stories using Star Trek characters and story scenarios get away with it only so long as they don't charge for it.

I've heard that CBS aggressively protects its Star Trek property with lawsuits, so maybe people are a little leery of using images and so on. I know there are freedom of speech protections for parodies, but that may be more for individuals than intellectual property. I think I heard that somewhere.

Right, Family Guy. I don't watch either one, so I get them mixed up. And I only know about that episode because I saw something about it, then copied this:
