Hello folks,

Todays guest me! I was asked a while ago by a couple of people if I'd consider answering the questionaiire myself, so with that in mind I'd like to take his opportunity to do so :-)

What's your R L name?

Drew Ketchen

If you could create a persona for a ST series, which series would it be, where would your persona be placed (Science, Engineering, Security etc) and what name would you give them?

I've always like the character that are the Security officers in all the series, and this is why I've played this the majority of times I've RP'd, so that would be where I'd place them. They would be no nonsense, straight by the book people
who don't suffer fools gladly, but will go that extra mile to make sure they do their duty to the best of their ability whilst helping their frinds out as best they can when they can also.

What is it most about Star Trek that you like?

The camaraderie, without a shadow of a doubt. Yes, there is always the chain of command, but push just past that and you can see there is an explicit level of trust, friendship and devotion that says "I'll lay my life down for you because I know you'll do the same thing for me."

What, if anything, is it about Star Trek that you don't like?

The fact that there is no longer a tv series on the go when there's plenty of scope for one being written and produced.

If you could become a scrpit writer, what thing(s) would you bring about to enhance the image of Star Trek?

Stop JJ Abrahams having anything to do with Star Trek because he's ruined it!

Go back to the basics that GR set out for the series and work on new srcipts from there. As I said above, there's plenty of scope to bring about new series and story lines, we could even have a little bit more indepth character driven stories (and before anyone thinks or says that's what's meant to be happening in the next film, just remember it's JJ Abrahams we're talking about who could be directing it, and he's got about as much clue to the way the chars of Star Trek should be written as I have of being able to write a series about explaining what dark matter is and why no-one can find it's density, even though the best scientific minds on our planet have tried to do so).

If you haven't guessed, I'm NOT a fan of JJ Abrahams having anything to do with Star Trek, nothing whatsoever.

Which series characters you like?

I love ALL TOS characters. After that, Worf, O'Brian and Garak (I do have a soft spot for him I must admit).

Would you consider writing fan fiction, or indeed, do you?

Yes, I've written in Star trek RPG's for a little over 12 years now. The genre isn't as strong as it once was, possibly due to the fact that we no longer have a tv series on the go, but if you look hard enough, you can still finf a few good places to write. If anyone is looking for a place to write in ST RPG's, please PM and I can suggest a couple of places for you to consider.

Is there a piece of insight that you'd like to pass onto the current script writers/directors of the new Star Trek films?

Yes, I've mentioned it twice already, and will do so again, don't let JJ Abrahams have anything to do with Star Trek because to me he's now ruined it, let him stick to Star Wars, something he's done infinitaly better with. I make no apologies to any JJ Abraham fans out there reading this because I've been a fan of ST since 1974, watching ALL the tv series and films, and to me, he's just not got what it takes to do a good job as a director on a ST movie.

If you could meet any Star Trek actor/actress, who would it be?

William Shatner. I'm a big fan of his work in the series and other works he's done both onscreen and off screen (his charity work as well, absolutely amazing what he does).

If you could ask them one question, what would that question be?

In the Star Trek movie "The Voyage Home", how did you manage to get your hair to stay on at the end of the film when you swam under water to release the clamps allowing the whales to escape from the KBP and out into the ocean?

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

I hope that one day soon a brand new series of Star Trek is written and produced.

If you could meet any Star Trek actor/actress, who would it be?

DeForest Kelley...I REALLY Wish He Were Still With Us...

I Have A LOT Of Quesions I Would Like To Ask Him, Actualy...

Hello again everyone,

Today we are delighted to have as our interviewee, Lynne. On behalf of the group I'd like to thank her for taking part, let's read what Lynne has to say :-)

What's your RL name?
Lynn

What's your persona's name?
Fleet Admiral Janeway *the original*

How did you become involved in simming?
I started out messing around on MySpace one night. For kicks, I typed 'Captain Janeway' into the search bar, and a slew of pages popped up! After doing a bit of poking around, I noticed that they were roleplaying. I'd been writing since I was small, and particularly enjoyed fanfic. But this was a whole new world. So, I made a profile, and the rest is history. I've become a staple in the Trek RP MySpace community as one of the longest running players.

What is it most about simming that you like?
The writing itself, putting new story ideas into play, exploring Janeway beyond the borders of the show, interacting with other characters, etc.

What is it about simming that you don't like?
There's nothing that I dislike about the simming in it's purest form. However, I DO dislike it when people take no pride in their work, and I also dislike when people bring real life conflicts into the community, stirring up unnecessary strife.

If you could, what thing(s) would you bring about to change simming for the better?
I'd make sure anyone who entered the RP world knew to leave their BS outside. Too many come to RP in order to escape their troubles. The last thing they need is to deal with a bunch of crying, overly sensitive people. I'd also make it mandatory to know command structure, protocol, etc., BEFORE making themselves members of the Starfleet.

Who would you say has helped/influenced you most in simming?
I've pretty much made my own way and been my own teacher. Though, there are times I've relied on the advice or opinions of my peers. A couple that come to mind are Dr. Ben Thrace, Lt. Janis Alicea (both original characters)...

Who are your main characters?
That I play? Janeway's my main. That I play WITH? Dr. Thrace, Annika Hansen, Q, Captain Matthew Erikson, Commander Tuvok…

If people wish to look at your games where can they be found?
MySpace. I don't RP anywhere else. www.myspace.com/fleetadmiraljaneway From there, others on my friends list may also have RP's on their own pages that I've participated in. If you’re not familiar with the lay of the land, it's hard to navigate without a guide, though. Haha.

Of the game(s) you play in, who would you say is the most favorite character you have created and why?
Janeway, of course. I really don’t know why. I just have an attachment to that character above all others.

Do you see any of your own personality in the characters you create?
Yes, but I also like to stretch my imagination, so there are also quite a few dissimilarities as well.

Is there a piece of insight or hindsight that you'd like to pass onto 'new' sim players that might help them?
-Don’t create a character or engage in an RP just to suit someone else. Do what makes YOU happy.
-If there are others who have irrational issues with you, forget ‘em.
-DON’T let yourself become involved in BS (some call it drama, but I think drama is what you see in the theater, not the complaining and arguing on the message boards).
-If there is BS going on and it doesn’t concern you, keep your nose clean and stay out of it.
-Take pride in both your character (s) and your writing, and don’t do things half @$$.
-Always respect the other writers around you, regardless of whether you like them or not.
-Most importantly, DON’T TAKE THINGS TOO SERIOUSLY. It is just RP, after all, nothing to live and die by. If you follow some of this advice, you’ll be a-okay, I promise.

If you are a GM/Asst. GM, what do you believe are the qualities that you bring to the game(s) you run or are involved in? N/A

If you could meet any Star Trek actor/actress, who would it be?
Kate Mulgrew

If you could ask them one question, what would that question be? I don’t have any questions for her. I’d probably just let her know how lovely and gifted I think she is, then I’d leave her be.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Nah, I’m good. Thanks for the interview!

Hello everyone,

After a short break, the interview group is now back again. Today we're privilaged and delighted to hear from David Blaser, let's here what David has to say shall we:

What's your RL name?

Dave Blaser

If you could create a persona for a ST series, which series would it be, where would your persona be placed (Science, Engineering, Security etc) and what name would you give them?

I wouldn't, I'm just not into gaming or simming.

What is it most about Star Trek that you like?

There are a lot of things that I like about Star Trek, from the positive outlook for the future, the technology that it shows which looks outlandish but which might be yet achieved, but mostly that it gives me the opportunity to shut off my brain and stop thinking about my own day-to-day issues that I have to deal with and gives me a chance to relax and recharge my batteries.

What, if anything, is it about Star Trek that you don't like?

Not really.. I guess I wasn't really a huge DS9 fan.

If you could become a scrpit writer, what thing(s) would you bring about to enhance the image of Star Trek?

Your question here seems to focus mostly on the television or movie aspect of Star Trek, and while that's the bulk of where we've seen Star Trek, there is a whole aspect that you might be missing out on by not including the literary part of it - there are TONS of great novels out there about Star Trek.

I think that the writers of the shows, movies and novels have all done a really very good job telling the story of Star Trek. I would enjoy seeing more from the aspect of the other worlds and races that our intrepid heroes interact with. There's a good book placed in the Original Series which talks about the Klingons in some depth, following a particular character from his youth through to his time as a Captain in the Imperial Navy. I enjoyed it and the view it gave me from the Klingon perspective. Check out "The Final Reflection" by John M. Ford.

Which series characters you like?

I'm not specifically drawn to one specific set of characters over another. Each character from each of the series is intended to show a different aspect of our humanity. The writers explore the human condition using those characters, and they do it quite well, I think.

Would you consider writing fan fiction, or indeed, do you?

No, I don't write fan fiction, but I do occasionally read it. The fan club I'm in actually has a Fiction Archive and, for the last two years, has run a short story contest for our members to write Star Trek fan fiction. Some of that fiction is really great, and I encourage folks who like it to visit the archive at:

http://fiction.sfi.org/

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great thing for those who are creative and who like to express themselves through writing and fiction, I was just never very good at it.

Is there a piece of insight that you'd like to pass onto the current script writers/directors of the new Star Trek films?

Nothing really significant. I know that they have to find ways to broaden their scope to attract new fans and get them to enjoy the franchise, but I hope that they do it in a way that keeps us current fans in mind.

If you could meet any Star Trek actor/actress, who would it be?

I've met quite a few already. They're all very interesting people. The two who are most honest about the entertainment industry and about the studios themselves are Armin Shimerman and Rene Auberjonois.

If you could ask them one question, what would that question be?

Every year at my local convention I try to come up with at least one intelligent and challenging question for the various guests. Sometimes it's hard, not really knowing the PERSON behind the CHARACTER.

One time my wife, having found out that John de Lancie was an avid sailor, asked him where in the world he would like to sail to. It was a great question for him, he had to think very hard, and because of that question he shared something of himself with the audience.

Hello again everyone,

Today we're privilaged to have Linda as our interviewee, and we thank her very much for agreeing to be interviewed. Let's see what Linda has to tell us folks :-)

What's your RL name?

Linda McKissock

If you could create a persona for a ST series, which series would it be, where would your persona be placed (Science, Engineering, Security etc) and what name would you give them?

I would work in Quarks bar on Deep Space Nine and I would be an El-Aurian, called Hearkena, as I really enjoy other peoples company and listening to other peoples stories.

What is it you like most about Star Trek?

Total escapism, the hope that maybe mankind might survive and that people would treat others well.

What, if anything, is it about Star Trek that you don't like?

I think that the world of Trek is pretty fine, I would prefer that religion was not included in it.

If you could become a script writer, what thing(s) would you bring about to enhance the image of Star Trek?

Not got the slightest ability in the writing sphere. I think more could be made of inter species relationships could be done. It seems to have lost the drive to give us a vision into the future as the original series did.

Which series characters you like?

If are you asking which series characters I like, the answer is TNG or are you asking which series characters am I like then that would be an El Aurian in the cross-over universe. As their ability to sence time and space differently then they would be well equiped to move between all universes.

Would you consider writing fan fiction, or indeed, do you?

no talent in that field at all.

Is there a piece of insight that you'd like to pass onto the current script writers/directors of the new Star Trek films?

I would like to remind them that humour has always been included in Trek and not to lose sight of that. Don't take themselves too seriously.

If you could meet any Star Trek actor/actress, who would it be?

I would love to meet Patrick Stewart as he is such an accomplished Actor and has done so much more than just Trek world.

If you could ask them one question, what would that question be?

I would ask him " Patrick, if you had 50 minutes with all the world leaders, what would you say to them?"

Hello everyone,

It's our privilage to have as our interviewee this time round, Sweet. On behalf of the group, I'd like to thank Sweet for taking the time to answer our questions, let's hear what she has to say :-)

If you could create a persona for a ST series, which series would it be, where would your persona be placed (Science, Engineering, Security etc) and what name would you give them?

I'd probably end up being a medical officer (in real life I'm a nurse), more than likely in some far flung outpost (I've a penchant for small towns) so, on a DS9 type show -- Deep Space 10,989, Podunk Station, and my name would be Rah'Een (because I'm totally unoriginal)

What is it most about Star Trek that you like?

Well, in the original series, I liked their brassy sense of adventure and conquer the universe type attitude. In later series, I liked the sense of hope and accomplishment. The human race had gone so far and grown so much, from the feudal war-like primitives to a sort of, all inclusive, save the universe while taking care (or trying to anyway) not to disturb other cultures or, if need be, interceding to keep a race from being annihilated. I think the positivity is the most alluring thing about the Trek series. Well, that, and, all the cool gadgets and awesome places they get to go :)

What, if anything, is it about Star Trek that you don't like?

I don't like how long we have to wait between series/movies :)

If you could become a script writer, what thing(s) would you bring about to enhance the image of Star Trek?

Humor, I think that the Star Trek franchise could use a bit of humor about itself to offset the seriousness, so, if I were to become a script writer, I'd become a Russell Davies/Joss Whedon type, only, you know...prettier.

Which series character(s) do you like?

My very favourite Trek character is Q. I think I'm drawn to the whole 'having fun with omnipotence' kinda thing he has going...plus, John Delancie's pretty awesome.

Odo would be pretty cool to be as well. Goodbye diet, hello being able to be any shape you want!

Would you consider writing fan fiction, or indeed, do you?

Alas, I'm not a very good writer, so, no, I don't feel I would give justice to any sort of fan fiction, hence why I would steal Davies/Russell's writing talents, lol

Is there a piece of insight that you'd like to pass onto the current script writers/directors of the new Star Trek films?

Don't mess with the core makeup of the characters - let them be whom they will be, and, build the story around that.

If you could meet any Star Trek actor/actress, who would it be?

I've met a few, but, would have liked getting a one on one with Majel, that would have been awesome!

If you could ask them one question, what would that question be?

In your wildest dreams did you see this glimmer of an idea that your husband had going as far and for as long as it has?

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Hmm, anything I'd like to add, um, I'd say numbers, but, math is not my strong suit, so, I'll say, add honey and lemon, stir and enjoy the sweetly tart beverage that is the Trek.

Hello again everyone,

We welcome Captain Braewyn Lem as our next interviewee, and we thank her for her time to do the interview. Let's hear what the Captain has to say to us :-)

What's your persona's name?

Captain Breawyn Lem.

How did you become involved in simming?

I first started playing roleplaying games in high school over 15 years ago. Being also a Star Trek fan, it was an easy transition from traditional sit-around-the-table play to online storytelling. I was first invited to join an existing online group which was part of a fleet, but within a few months that fleet had disintegrated from infighting. Some of us decided to launch "Starship Independence NX-90201" as a standalone group - this would have been sometime in late 2006 - and we've been going ever since.

What is it most about simming that you like?

The opportunity to collaborate with others, telling a story set in the Star Trek universe but using the characters and starship of our own creation.

What is it about simming that you don't like?

I suppose that the nature of the internet makes it easy for anyone to start up their own ship/fleet, and there's probably a glut of ships and fleets out there right now with too many self-styled admirals and not enough players, especially experienced showrunners/gamemasters to actually get a game going. On a personal note, a few years ago another group/ship took one of our stories, "Darker Than Obsidian" and basically plagiarized the entire story, passing off our effort as their own with minimal changes to character names and story detail.

Who would you say has helped/influenced you most in simming?

Undoubtedly it would be the crew of the Independence: they are a tremendous source of inspiration to me when I am thinking about character and story arcs. And what Ray Bradbury once told me is always at the forefront of my writing: "Write what you love, and write every day."

Who are your main characters?

I play the captain as well as one of the junior officers, Lieutenant Bayushi Chisato. On occasion I may write for some of the many secondary recurring characters who populate the rest of the ship's crew.

If people wish to look at your games where can they be found?

The main forum where our stories are posted is at http://z14.invisionfree.com/StarshipIndependence/
Our ship's website, which contains background and technical specs (for those who like that kind of thing) is at http://www.uss-independence.org

Of the game(s) you play in, who would you say is the most favourite character you have created and why?

I've liked them all equally, more or less. Some of them didn't quite turn out to be what I expected (for better or for worse), but that's also part of the character growth and discovery in roleplaying.

Do you see any of your own personality in the characters you create?

There is always some aspect of myself in my characters. Within the Star Trek genre, I try to steer our characters towards being nobler, more accomplished and heroic than what people would be today. That's part of the escapist fantasy in roleplaying, of course, but also something Gene Roddenberry believed in: that in the future humanity would surpass its own ugliness and pettiness today.

Is there any advice that you'd like to pass onto 'new' sim players that might help them?

Anyone who is thinking joining online roleplaying should make themselves aware of what they're getting into. Roleplaying is a great way for you to create an alter-ego of yourself, place that person into a setting which you are familiar and have enjoyed watching/reading about many times, and interacting with others with the same interests. It is important that you find a group whose style of play and writing you are comfortable and enjoy socializing with, because it takes a degree of effort and commitment to keep up with your storytelling/roleplaying week after week, even year after year.

What do you believe are the qualities that you bring to your game?

My approach to role-playing has always been centered around team-building; that is, trying to put together a group of players (and characters) who can get along and interact well together as a storytelling group, despite differences in age, nationality, culture and writing and role-playing ability. I think that's one of the reasons that our game has lasted as long as it did - five years now and still going.

Tell us about some of the interesting things you've done in your game.

I had an idea several years ago when I saw that all our characters were senior, command-level officers, and threw a challenge to my players: could we create and run a team of Starfleet Academy cadets and tell their stories from the other end of the ladder, as it were. It was an experiment. We created a group of midshipmen characters and told their stories - the challenge of being taken out of the classroom and thrown into a "real" starship environment, standing a watch or being assigned to an away team, all for the first time - that is such an exciting, challenging point as a Starfleet officer. We liked them so much we kept them. We wrote their graduation ceremony into our storyline and some were assigned back to the Independence as freshly-commissioned ensigns: three of our lieutenants now, having advanced through the ranks since, came from that batch.

What are the challenges of running a game, especially one which has gone on as long as yours has?

Without a doubt, continuity and style. I am a stickler for consistency but the longer our game runs, sometimes it becomes a challenge to remember things which we've established previously. As for style, on the one hand I like to keep to the style established on TNG and the feature films - the way Starfleet officers behave and interact, the procedures for away team missions, the way starship captains like to hear from everyone before making a decision - but on the other hand, we have injected some of our own elements into the show, like introducing a starfighter wing (an obvious influence from "space carrier" movies like Macross and Battlestar Galactica.) The challenge becomes how far can we take these things which make our ship unique and interesting, yet without losing the "Star Trek-iness."

How do you plan your stories?

At any given time, I think we have half a dozen or more story ideas floating around in various stages of development. I always like to have a story worked out completely before using it, because we have had a few occasions in which we ended up writing ourselves into a corner. On the Independence, there are two of us who are the main "showrunners", in that we plan and detail (as much as we can) each episode before we run it. There are some stories which I've always wanted to do - for example, a story involving Section 31 or the mirror universe - but I also want to be sure that we have a really good idea and direction behind it before we do it. Speaking of which, we are coming up to our "super-sexy" (as we've jokingly referred to it) landmark 50th episode in a few months' time, and it's going to be a ball.

Have you been inspired by any Star Trek writer?

Without a doubt, Michael Piller. He joined ST:TNG in its third season as executive producer and head of the writing team, and almost immediately you can see how the episodes became very character-focused and character-driven - "The Defector", "The Enemy", "Yesterday's Enterprise", "Sins of the Father" - rather than the moral allegories and plot-driven stories which we saw in the first two seasons. His truism that if you have clarity about what your character is and remain true to that - how she speaks, acts and thinks - everything else which follows there becomes more believable and convincing.

Have you considered any other kind of Star Trek writing, outside simming?

We've always joked about doing an erotica version of the "Starship Independence." That's all I'm prepared to say at this point.

What do you have planned ahead?

Our game time is contemporanous with real time, so one year in our game world also equals one year in real time. As it happens, according to our game's stardate, next year Romulus will be destroyed by the red-matter black hole, as depicted in the movie Star Trek (2009) - so we are working on an idea of including that part of the canon into our game.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Thank you for the opportunity to share. It's been a pleasure.

Hello again everyone,

We have another willing volunteer interviewee this week, and it's Ken, thanks very much for doing this Ken, as always, we're very greatful to people such as yourself for agreeing to answer these interviews. Let's hear what Ken has to say folks :-)

What's your RL name?

Ken B. Lindler

If you could create a persona for a ST series, which series would it be, where would your persona be placed (Science, Engineering, Security etc) and what name would you give them?

Hmmm. 23rd century, my default setting. Probably Security even though the risk is very high but risk is the business. I dunno about the name probably Ken cause there doesn't seem to be many Kens in Starfleet.

What is it most about Star Trek that you like?

The tech def. The transporter would come in handy so I don't have to commute as much. Of course there is a possiblity of transporter malfunction beaming into an alternate universe another me is created(might come in handyif not evil) etc. The replicator is my favorite you can walk up the machine and say what you want and boom there it is.

What, if anything, is it about Star Trek that you don't like?

Nah I like it, there isn't anything I don't like.

If you could become a scrpit writer, what thing(s) would you bring about to enhance the image of Star Trek?

Probably go back to old school, have 'em exploring and coming across grouchy aliens and unexplored areas of space.

Which series characters you like?

McCoy, Leonard H. Son of David.

Would you consider writing fan fiction, or indeed, do you?

Nah, PS 3, pizza, and watching movies are my thing.

Is there a piece of insight that you'd like to pass onto the current script writers/directors of the new Star Trek films?

Yeah do a Doomsday Machine movie where they encounter a bigger badder one. A follow up to the TOS episode.

If you could meet any Star Trek actor/actress, who would it be?

Gotta go with William Shatner.

If you could ask them one question, what would that question be?

"Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh." After that the question: "Gonna write any more Trek books?"

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Yeah, my new desk chair from Best Buy is very comfortable. Now I can stare at the computer for hours.
