Haven't been following Trekspace to closely lately because the first week of January my mother suffered a heart attack and spent 5 days in ICU, on day 6 she suffered a stroke and spent 2 more days in the hospital. Mom is currently recovering at home. This past Monday a CT Scan revealed an aneurysm on a major vessel of her heart, find out this Tuesday if surgery will be needed.
On January 24th my wife and 16 years old daughter was starting a road trip to Illinois to see my 18 year daughter graduate from the Navy's Basic Training. 4 hours into the trip they suffered a fatal auto rollover accident 33 miles east of Flagstaff. My wife broke her back and right wrist and my 16 year old daughter died at the scene.
The wife has since had surgery to install two 5 inch titanium rods inserted into her back to stabilize the broken T10 vertebrae. She is healing and lucky still able to walk, she had no damage to her spinal cord. So as you can see my year is starting out badly.

Please "sign" this e-petition to get George Takei, Captain Hikaru Sulu, on the Paramount Pictures' Tournament of Roses Parade float.  http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/georgetakeiattherosebowlparade/ (See artist's rendering of the float on my Trekspace blog.)

It was Facebook fans who set up the petition and started a page supporting it - at http://www.facebook.com/pages/George-Takei-at-the-Rose-Bowl-Parade/...  - and there is no cost. (Ignore the page that asks for contributions after you "sign"; that's just for the petition site. You can close the page, your vote was counted.) There are over 25,000 votes already!

I'm an Original TREKasaurus. [And, yes, this pic is fairly recent- Dec '09. I'm older than I look.]

We NEVER had a color tv because my mom was convinced the radiation would give us cancer. Watching TOS on video eventually was a real eye opener.. the colored cubes of food in Journey to Babel, awesomeness.

Really makes me appreciate having all of Trek on dvd now.. such a luxury.

Black and white television and of course those vacuum tubes your parents had to buy at the 5&10 to keep it working. I remember using those same tubes (bad ones of course) as targets for my bb gun. I clearly remember our first colored TV was a 25” Zenith. Star Trek in color was somehow a whole new show.

My thoughts are with you and your mother during this family crisis that you have to endure daily. I lost a very good friend and business partner to colon cancer almost tem years ago. He was 38 and must too young for such a cruel disease. One can shower a person with thousands of words to try and make them feel better. In some ways I’m sure it helps, in other ways it seems like pity. I have one thing to tell you – no matter what life hand you. Be strong and be there when your mother needs you.

My mom got through cancer - you never know. Peace & strength to you both, DB.

Hi folks. Update time. Broncoscopy & biopsy yesterday. The docs say Mom has lung cancer that is attached to the chest wall and so would not be a candidate for surgery. Discuss options tomorrow. GOD made blind see, deaf hear, lame walk, and dead live. For HIM, this is nothing.

Even if you had a color TV when the Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan in 1964 you would have saw them in b&w because the The Ed Sullivan Show didn't go color until the spring of 1966 just before The Beatles' last world tour. Gilligan's Island went color in its second season, and Lost in Space in its third and last season.

I don't remember exactly when we got a color TV, but I remember seeing various shows go from b&w to color: Gilligan's Island, Sheriff John, Lost In Space, etc. We may even have had a nice big color console (I still don't know where that word comes from) when we saw the Beatles in b&w on the Ed Sullivan show.

During the early development of color television both CBS and RCA, who owned NBC, had developed separate but wildly incompatible color TV systems. CBS developed a system that actually used a fast spinning color wheel in front of the TV screen to create a color picture while RCA developed an all-electronic color TV system. The FCC chose RCA thank goodness. And in 1966 all three TV networks
went all color including a sci-fi show called Star Trek.
