The next new Star Trek TV series should stay in the new alternate universe set in the J.J. Abrams' movies, and simply be a new version of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but set only 40 years later in the late 23rd century instead of the 24th century, with a different crew, a different Enterprise, and set in a different Federation with a different political attitude (no socialism, no secular humanism and no "PRIME DIRECTIVE"-- this Federation is like the early United States expanding westward claiming a Manifest Destiny. Thus this Federation is going where no man has gone before looking to conquer territory with an olive leaf and an iron fist). And lets have clarity about Star Fleet-- it's the Federation Space Navy. And the Enterprise in this incarnation is an old but refurbished Heavy Cruiser on detached duty to the Federation Survey Corps with a dual mission to seek out new worlds and civilizations, but also patrol the outer fringes of Federation territory. Which is why the Enterprise is never totally alone, it is part of a Starfleet taskforce assigned to that sector. But this Federation is not yet a "super-power" in the galaxy unlike the Klingons and Romulans who are currently locked in a cold war dispute. The Federation is the new kid on the block, and the de-facto leader of a loose alliance of non-aligned worlds. Both the Klingons and Romulans see the Federation as a threat, and tensions in the galaxy are high.

I think by the end of Enterprise, many were simply 'done' with Trek for awhile. I talked to my brother and many others who felt it had become too much for too long. Plus, it does't hold the tech edge it once did with all the other near future and/or scifi stuff out there.
Maybe in time...

"Well, we saw a shattered moon. I'm sure it was a visual reference to ST:VI but the admiral (in the novelization, anyway) mentions Praxis as a power production facility along with other orbiting moons and planetoids. He suggest the Enterprise…"

Scott replied to Scott's discussion ST: Into Darkness, filling the plotholes [SPOILERS]
"The novelization seems to provide a slightly better explanation for beaming from Earth to Kronos (natively, Qo'noS). He apparently used the experimental transwarp beaming device to relay himself to an orbiting freighter, then on to the Moon…"
