Comment by James on September 14, 2012 at 12:12pm Captain James T was in Mayberry!!! ha ha I'm a big Andy Griffith fan, I never noticed that before with Floyd's shop in the background, thats great! I love it!!
Comment by Holo-Girl on September 9, 2012 at 6:59pm @Trekscribbler (aka Ed): Lol It seems you're always looking at things a day or two before I do. I did not know that about Roddenberry. I knew Star Trek didn't have much money, but I didn't know it was enough of an issue for him to leave it for more lucrative projects. I guess that does make sense, though. He does have to make money too.
Yeah, I read that one yesterday. It was pretty good. I think I'd heard/read about eight of them, but there were two on there I wasn't familiar with.
As to the lack of cash, that wasn't all that surprising. In fact, I believe that's principally why Roddenberry kinda/sorta disappeared from the show in its third season. He realized what a cash cow he could create outside of the TV program -- merchandising products and the like on the side -- and he pretty much abandoned Trek at the time. Once the show went into syndication and became the super-hit that it was, he came back into the fold, championing a new series to anyone who would listen.
Comment by Holo-Girl on September 9, 2012 at 6:10pm You're welcome, John!
That fact was interesting to me as well. It seems that whether it's the 1960s or 2000s, execs have a hard time recognizing great shows. I know they have many factors to consider, but the amount of great shows that get chopped after one or two seasons is kind of shocking.
The lack of cash is surprising. The funny thing about the lack of cash is that it caused them to come up with some of the best parts of Trek. I love finding out all of the different ways they worked around the various obstacles that popped up.
Comment by John (aka 3 of C) on September 9, 2012 at 5:48pm Very cool - I didn't know ANY of that!
My favorite: Paramount tried to cash out on Gene Roddenberry - what were those execs THINKING?
Most surprising: the lack of cash, leading to things like using the Mayberry set ... twice!
Thanks for sharing, HG!
