The social network for Star Trek Fans!
Not too long ago - just a few months, really - I came back to Trekspace after a somewhat lengthy period of inactivity. In the short time I have been back I have met great people and struck up some wonderful correspondence, the likes of which I have not had before.
Today I went through my inbox, archiving some messages and deleting others. As I went along, moving those messages around, names and conversations I had forgotten about started creeping upwards. I went through a few of them; as I read, I started to get excited, I wanted to talk to these people again and see what they were up to - I wanted to catch up with them. I clicked the names to take me to their profiles, but, unfortunately, their profiles were no longer there.
I do not know where these people went. They may still be here, just with a different profile and name, or they may be long gone; I really have no way of knowing. Either way, I am sad that I didn't stay in touch with them when I had the chance, or get better information from them so that we could stay in touch if one of us took a break from or left this site.
Hopefully, I'll run into those people again, and we can start right back up where we left off, but I don't think that's likely to happen.

Yeah, I love Trekspace, to be perfectly honest. Sure, it'd be nice if it were a bit busier -- wouldn't every site? -- but, at the end of the day, I just like a laid back cyber-environment where I can have a few friends who enjoy their Trek as much as I do. Anyone wanting to 'friend' me over on Facebook (four or five), send me a private message, and I'm up for it. I have a few folks from here who's crossed over there, and that works for me, too. I don't post all that much on Facebook, but it's another venue to keep in touch.
I think I joined after all the sniping, though. I've only seen a few instances that I thought were pretty silly and highschoolish. It happens everywhere on the web, so ya gotta take the good with the bad, I suppose. I will say that a lot of what developed in an awful lot of Trek boards over the last five years or so I personally believe was largely orchestrated by another fan group who were decidedly upset with Trekdom for some very specific reasons, but, like I said, good with the bad.
Comment by Holo-Girl on June 3, 2012 at 10:02am @Mike: I didn't know there were things like that going on here. I think I've seen a little bit of it since I've been back, but luckily it's easily avoidable and tuned out. Let's all hope that nonsense doesn't start up again.
Fan Central - I've never heard of that site. I will look it up. Yes, Facebook is pretty boring. I'm glad that I'm able to see all of the important events in the lives of the people that I knew, but I don't post much of my own information.
Thank you! I'm glad the rumors, sniping, and religious activity didn't drive you off; your presence, as well as that of Trekscribbler (aka Ed), Jayne, and many of the other people that are here, makes this site a unique and fascinating place.
Comment by Mike on June 2, 2012 at 8:03pm When I first joined back in 2008, I practically lived on this site. Then, for reasons that I've never quite figured out, it sort of got like high school, with people sniping at each other, spreading nasty rumors and making unwanted advances on women. There were also quite a few religious fanatics who thought that they could come here and spread their " good" to all of us sinners. Seems to have gotten a little better in the last year or so, just so long as people remember that we're all here to talk about Star Trek and have fun. Don't take anything too seriously.
I agree with you, Holo-Girl, I feel most at home on this site--although Fan Central is pretty good for nerds, too. I only go on Facebook to keep up with relatives who I don't get to see all that often, but otherwise, that place is really boring. I am glad that you're going to stay here, because we need more intelligent people like you to make this site work!
Comment by Holo-Girl on May 31, 2012 at 6:20pm @Jayne: I'm glad you're back. Exactly, after I became active here again, it was really easy to get back in the swing of things with little effort. I don't think my profile had been updated for 48 hours - probably less than a day, actually - before I met someone new, who I now correspond with often.
I'm more comfortable here on Trekspace than I am on any of the other social sites that I am a member of, or have been a member of in the past. The discussions, the photos, the various skills and backgrounds that the people here have - it all makes for a very stimulating environment.
Comment by Jayne on May 31, 2012 at 12:25pm I'm the same in a way, as I've been away from Trekspace for an awful long time (mainly because of illness part of the time) but am going to make a concerted effort to beam down here more often in the future. Its nice that you can go away and come back, and there are so many people to talk to, make new friends.
Comment by Holo-Girl on May 29, 2012 at 8:35pm I re-read my post; boy, does it sound forlorn. I really didn't mean to sound like I was sad.
I've already met a couple of people that I love talking to, and I am no stranger to this particular stuff of life; I have lost contact with people and then found them again, usually many years later, several times.
The only thing I think makes it unlikely that I will meet up with these people again is the fact that their profiles were so vague, and they didn't have any pictures or unique images posted. I wouldn't be able to tell if it was them if they did come back or are already back. They might remember me, but I think that's unlikely too.
Thank you for the advice, though; I'll keep it in mind.
Trekspace has never really been all that busy. Methinks a lotta folks kinda/sorta come and go. Familiar faces pop back up every now & then. If your friends were here before, maybe they'll be back. In the meantime, just keep making more friends to share your online experiences with. It's just the stuff of life.
