The social network for Star Trek Fans!
Someone may have already brought this topic up as this information is weeks old, but I think it's interesting and worth a mention, so here we go...
On July 9th 2012, io9 posted an article titled Did Karl Urban just reveal Benedict Cumberbatch's Star Trek villain? The article says that, according to SFX, Karl Urban was asked about Cumberbatch and replied "He's awesome, he's a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary."
For those who do not know who Gary Mitchell is, here is io9's rundown of the character and the plot of the episode he was featured in: "Gary Mitchell, for those who missed it, was the quasi-villain of the first episode of Star Trek that William Shatner filmed (although not the first aired episode.) Mitchell, an old friend of Kirk's from the Academy, gets hit with strange energy when the Enterprise passes through the barrier at the edge of the galaxy, and develops godlike powers... which in turn make him into a psychopath."
There are a few reasons why Mitchell may not be the villain Cumberbatch is playing (hint: read the article for these reasons), but this situation is still plausible.
Here are my questions, Trekspacers: what do you think about Gary Mitchell as the villain in the newest Star Trek movie? Do you think Gary Mitchell is a better villain for this movie than Khan Noonien Singh, who Cumberbatch was also said to have been playing? What do you think about the TOS episode that Mitchell appeared in?

Actually, I'd find it a bit surprising if JJ and company chose him. They seem to go for far more 'techy' plots and characters, and Mitchell -- when all is said and done -- is just a God-creature. Who knows? Maybe they'll try to find some way to spin it IF it comes to light.
Comment by Holo-Girl on August 14, 2012 at 8:43am I would be thrilled if the 'villian' of the movie were to be Gary Mitchell.
Kahn was a pretty evil character. A Great, human character in Star Trek II, but still very strongly evil.
I thought Mitchell was a much more interesting - Star Trek type character, because he was misguided - he started out good, and became evil. He had so much more dimension to him than some of the other villians. Also that episode brought up so many good questions.
Yeah, this came up, and it was debunked pretty quickly by folks who claim JJ does this: he deliberately plants misinformation in the press in order to get fanboys (and fangirls) up in arms. But, once again, ya never know.
As to the original episode, yes, it's definitely one of my favorites -- it probably wouldn't make my personal top 10, but it'd easily be in the top 20. It's one of the better 'God syndrome' outings for Trek.
