The Doctor was great because he could be obnoxious, but he wasn't two-dimensional. He was also someone you could empathize with. Like that time he left Voyager for a singing career that only lasted a couple of days before he was dumped for an improved model. It's so painful, but you have to like him for learning from the experience.
